Our programs produce highly qualified graduates who make meaningful contributions to the varied fields of recreation and leisure services.
Our program is comprised of three fields, Community Recreation, Outdoor Recreation/Education and Therapeutic Recreation. You can choose a concentration in one of these areas or take courses across all three.
Community Recreation strives to ensure citizens have access to quality recreation programs and services. This includes the study of public, private and non-profit settings. Including the marketing, management, finance, and strategic planning involved in leisure services.
Outdoor Recreation focuses on leadership in the natural environment. This includes risk and resource management, leadership practices, outdoor education, and social and environmental justice in the outdoors.
Therapeutic Recreation is dedicated to ensuring all individuals, regardless of ability, have access to meaningful leisure in their lives. Students will gain hands-on experience in providing services to marginalized individuals and using leisure to improve functional abilities and quality of life. Graduates are prepared to write the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) exam.
Concurrent BRLS Outdoor and Bachelor of Education provides students with an overview of the potential environmental, health, social, and economic benefits that can be achieved through recreation and leisure services and outdoor education. The program provides practical experiences through small group activities, experiential learning and/or placement/internship opportunities. In six years, you’ll complete an Honours degree in Recreation & Leisure Studies as well as a Bachelor of Education degree.
Our courses combine theory, practice and experiential learning that will include labs, seminars, placements, field experiences and internships. Our faculty have a wide variety of research and teaching expertise from community, sport and youth development to outdoor leadership, mental health, gerontology and leisure in long term care.
We maintain active connections with our Recreation and Leisure Studies alumni, providing our classes with guest lecturers and key networking, internship and employment opportunities.
